Emergent Reading Program

Emergent Reading Program

UMS runs a really special emergent reading program that brings together families, students, and teachers. But it only works if we have you.  On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9-10 am, we need volunteers to come in to read with our students.  It's a great experience and the kids love reading to other adults.  It's quite a rewarding experience, as you see first hand the growth and progress each child makes.  Anyone can volunteer (pending background checks), and you don't have to commit to each week.  Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings! Whatever time you can donate, we'll take! Here's what it looks like in a nutshell:

Each child will have a fabric reading bag. In that bag, he will have a book, a notepad, and a letter or sight word deck.

Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, kids will read their old book to a volunteer, read their letters/sight words, and then check out a new book.  The volunteer will read the new book to the child and ask the child to read it back to them.  The volunteer is then asked to write some positive comments in the notepad for the student to take home and share with her family.

The volunteer is then invited to read with another student and repeat the process until all kids are read with or the volunteer has to leave.

At the end of the year, we will have a Readers' Tea to celebrate the kids' accomplishments and the work they did during the school year.  ALL families are invited to celebrate with us.  It truly is an exciting celebration and one that the kids really value.

So, if you have time to give, please let me know! THANK YOU!
